When spring hits and we get those new plant jitters, desperate to get some color into our gardens, we instinctively go with all the blooming shrubs and flowers at our local garden store. And why not? We’ve been aching for color for months!
Stop! Don’t do that!
Well, don’t just do that.
In Michigan, our fickle seasons produce long stretches of singular colors. Spring, which gets confused by all the “winter-on” and “winter-off” shenanigans, has no idea when to pop out or stay hidden. And so, as months and months of winter stretch into spring we go through riveting color changes–from the iridescent glow of…white to the majestic stretch of…brown.
As if the darkness of winter isn’t depressing enough, we keep seeing the same painfully flat color. What’s a person to do?
Thankfully, there is a solution and it’s simple!
I know we don’t want to think about winter once spring has finally hit, but it’s super important to keep in mind the space, time, and resources required for planting colorful winter plants into our landscapes. There are many options available, from the brilliant shades of green you can get from Arborvitaes, to the endless spectrum of berry producing plants like Crabapples and Hollys.
Your landscape doesn’t have to be a dull expanse of white and brown. You can get color into your view! Start planning now for next winter’s landscape.
